The 1850 census1313 lists in one family (ages in parentheses): Hugh Barckley (34), Phoebe J Barckley (32), Sarah E Barckley (8), Franciscus(sic) Barckley (5), Andrew Law[sic] (40), Caroline Law (38), Mary Law (38), Margaret Barckley (36), Ann E Barckley (32) and others who appear to be boarders or servants. Of these persons: Hugh Barkley married1570 Phoebe Jane Fulton; Caroline Barkley (Hugh's sister) married Andrew Low; Margaret and Ann Eliza Barkley were sisters to Hugh and Caroline. Special thanks to Kelley Hartley for information leading to documentation of several Hugh Barkley descendants - particularly, dau Francenia, son William Montgomery, and their descandants. The 1855 census lists Hugh as resident in NY 17 years and lists his birth county (Orange). His obituary2644 lists his birthplace as Ulster County.
The marriage record for Hugh and Phebe lists her maiden name. The death date on Phebe's headstone is given as Feb 29, vs Feb 28. The 1855 census lists Phoebe as resident in New York 22 years and lists her birth county. In that census, an Agnes Carpenter, age 38, b Sullivan Co., NY, listed relationship as "S. Law," apparently Phoebe's married sister, and (apparently) Agnes' daughter Sarah Carpenter, "Neice," age 16, are listed in Hugh Barkley's household. Five years later, the 1860 census1266 lists "Ann" Carpenter, age 43, and Sarah C Carpenter, age 21, in the household of Hugh and Phoebe.
There is a headstone840 in Slate Hill Cemetery, Goshen, NY, with John S Carpenter and his wife Agnes C Fulton. That Agnes was born Dec 1, 1816, and died Feb 23, 1894. In addition, the New York city death index4059 for Agnes C Carpenter, with the same death date as the headstone mentioned above, lists her parents as Andrew and Catherine Fulton. Those names and dates correlate well for Pheobe's sister. From that information, it is assumed that Andrew and Catherine Fulton are Phoebe's parents.

Sarah was christened2522 Mar 20, 1842, at the Eighth Presbyterian Church, New York, NY. A death announcement appears in the New York Evening Express, April 9, 1863: "On the 7th instant, Miss SARAH C. BARKLEY, aged 21 years." As Sarah C Barkley doesn't seem to otherwise appear after the 1860 census, that announcement may be for the daughter of Hugh and Phoebe Barkley. It is likely she died before 1896, as her father's obituary2644 does not mention her as surviing him. Her mother and her three siblings, William, Wallace and Francenia, are specifically mentioned.
