In 1850¹²³¹, James was a brickmaker. In 1860¹²³² and 1870¹²³³, he was a (day) laborer. In 1875²⁵⁵¹, a farm laborer. In 1880¹²⁴⁶, a farmer.

The birth and death dates in the image of his headstone⁸⁴⁰ appear quite distinct.

A petition to prove the will of James Barkley was filed in Orange county, New York, May 21, 1896 [New York Wills/Probate Recs., Orange Co., Minutes of Proceedings, Vol 3, p 41]. The will of James Barkley, deceased, an inhabitant of the town of Crawford, Orange Co., New York, was proved 6 Jul 1896, and Nancy Barkley was granted administration [New York Wills/Probate Recs., Orange Co., Letters Testamentary, Vol P-Q, p 359].

Nancy is enumerated with husband James in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1875 and 1880. In 1910, she was living in the household of John W Couser (listed as "Cowser"), relationship listed as "Aunt." In fact, John's (deceased) wife was Mary Ann (Westervelt) Couser, the sister of Peter Westervelt. Peter was the husband of Ann Eliza Barkley, a distant cousin of Nancy's husband James Barkley. The year of her death on her headstone⁸⁴⁰ isn't entirely clear. However, the New York Death Index, 1852-1956, 1921 (www.ancestry.com) lists Barclay, Nancy, 31 May, Middletown.
