Cynthia was born¹⁴³¹ in Buffalo, her parents then residing in Niagara Falls.

Cynthia graduated¹⁴³¹ Niagara Falls High School and enrolled as a freshman at Elmira (NY) College¹⁴³¹ in 1964 ( Dean's List¹⁴³¹ 1967 ). At Elmira College, she was a representative to the Judicial Board, 1967, a group upholding the standards of the college. She majored¹⁴³² in English literature.

Following her graduation with honors, at the time of her marriage to Thomas, Cynthia was librarian¹⁴³² at Cornell University, where Thomas was enrolled in the School of Law.
