At the time of their marriage (MVR v182:154) Eli, age 23, was a periodical dealer, They were married by John H Twombly, clergyman, Lynn, MA.

Eli enlisted1993 in Co. H, Mass First Inf Regiment in May 1861 as a private. He mustered out 23 May 1864. The record states he was wounded during service. A muster record (fold3.com) for Eli Veazie, Private, Co H, 1 Reg't Mass Infantry, dated "Jan & Feb, 1864," lists him as absent with the remarks: "Wounded at Battle of Locust Grove Nov 27, 1863. In Hospt. at Alexandria, Va." Another muster roll for Eli, dated "Mar & Apr, 1864," remarks: "Discharged at Washington, C.C., Mch 23, 1864 for disability - from wounds rec'd at Locust Grove Nov 27 1863, per order Gen. Augur."

His discharge papers (fold3.com) include a hospital card for Eli Veazie, age 23, nativity: Mass, single, residence Chelsea Mass; (father) Geo A Veazie, Chelsea, Mass; Private, Co H, 1st Mass Inf.; admitted Dec 5, 1863, from the field. His diagnosis: "Amputation of three first fingers & removal of matacarpal bones of left hand (on field)." The cause of the wound is difficult to decipher, but may be "Mine Error," on Nov 27, 1863. The treatment: "Simple dressing," and the result: "Discharged March 26th, 1864. Wound (closed), hand totally disabled."

The certificate of disability for discharge for Eli Veazie states he was wounded at the battle of Mini? Run Va, Nov 27, 1863, by Mini Vall, and "an amputation of 1st, 2nd & 3d fingers at the carpo-metacarpal articulation was performed on the field." There was also a loss of some of the carpals. He was evaluated at the 3 Div. General Hospital, Alexandria, Va. The examination results on that certifiate state the would was received in battle at Mini-Run, engaged at Bull Run Fair Oaks, and Williamsburg - "not suitable to enter as re-enlist." Signed, Edwin Bentley, Surgeon, U.S.Vols., in Charge.

In 1870, an Eli Veazie appears in the census1996 for Jacksonville, FL, enumerated June 17, a grocers clerk. His wife Bessie is not listed in the record. On Sept 3 of the same year, Eli, a clerk in a dry goods store, along with Bessie, are living1995 in Smithfield, VA.

In the 1880s and 1890s, Eli Veazie is mentioned in various newspaper articles (as well as the 1880 census1761) as the truant officer for Chelsea, MA.

On his death certificate (MVR 1906/29:219), his age at death was 63y 9m 28d, and C N Butler, MD, writes he died of cerebral hemmorhage. At the time of death, Eli was retired. The informant for that record was his wife. He was buried Woodlawn Cem., Everett, MA, Aug 14, 1906. His age at death, 63 yrs, 9 mos and 28 days, is used to calculate his birthdate. Hillman800 has Oct 1845, apparently from the same source - typo? Cemetery informaton1994 has Eli b 1843. His civil war profile1993 has him born "abt 1841."

It appears Eli and Bessie had no children.

Bessie lived with her parents apparently until her marriage. She died (MVR 1906/29:278) of intestinal tuberculosis. That record lists her father as Edward Rich, b unknown, and mother as Eliza Rich, b unknown. There is no informant recorded.
