In 1870, Herbert and Nellie are listed in the household of Herbert's parents, Michael and Jane, with a daughter Hattie, age 7. Nellie's maiden name is listed as "Curtis" in the marriage record²³¹⁷ for daughter Florence to Seth B Moore. However, Nellie's death record²²⁰⁴ lists her parents as Samuel Carter and Mary M Harriman. The 1860 and 1870 census records support the assumption her surname is Carter with parents as indicated. Though she is enumerated as "Laura E" in those censuses, her birthdate, parents and location (Frankfort) match the death record.
