Family of Ruthven Porter VAN ZANDT and Francenia BARKLEY
Married4036 1862 Nov 184036 at parsonage 115 9th, New York City, NY4067. Ruthven and Francenia were married by Rev M S Hutton. In a widow's pension requiest4067 filed by Francenia B Van Zandt, she states she was married under the name "L Barkley" at a parsonage in New York (at the same address as on the marriage certificate,) and neither she nor her husband has former marriages.
Ruthven's full name is listed on the marriage certificate1728 for his son Wallace's marriage to Maude Johnson. It is also listed in correspondence2643 to the War Department Jul 15, 1896, in which Francenia Van Zandt inquires concerning Ruthven's war service, apparently in lieu of lost discharge papers. Ruthven served2636 in the Civil War in Co. D of the 71 NY State Militia (for 3 months in 1861.) Francenia filed1007 for pension Sep 12 1896.
In other non-military records, Ruthven's occupations are listed variously as artist and bank note printer. Of particular note, Ruthven's brother Clarence was, at one time, superintendent of the American Bank Note company.
Although her name is given as Franciscus (a masculine form) and Frances in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, other records indicate that Francenia was her name. Conveniently, the 1855 NY census lists the county of her birth. Her father's obituary2644 in 1896 mentions daughter "Mrs F. B. Van Zandt" as surviving him. Francenia lived with her parents from birth until her marriage to Ruthven P Van Zandt. After Ruthven's death, Francenia lived1735 in Jersey City until sometime between 1910 and 1920. She is severally times listed in city directories as the widow of Ruthven P Van Zandt.
A pension drop4066 form (termination of pension) for soldier Ruthven P Van Zandt, pensioner Francenia B Van Zandt, dated Mar 20, 1922, states that the named pensioner has this day been dropped from the roll because of death "Mch 9 1922." It is assumed that is Francenia's death date.
Child 2. Sada
Sada lived with her parents in 1870 and 1880. In an article in The (New York) Evening Telegram, Mon, May 24, 1897 (fultonhistory.com), Sada Van Zandt is listed on the Committee on Restaurant and Refreshments for a carnival given by the Trinity Episcopal Church of Hoboken. In 1900, following her father's death, she still lived with her mother "Francenea," enumerated as a bookkeeper. She was living with her mother in 1910 and 1920, with an occupation as bookkeeper/stenographer in the clothing industry, corsets and children's wear. In 1930, she was a bookkeeper for an underwear company, rooming in the residence of Katherine McMullen. She doesn't seem to appear in records or documents after 1930.
Child 3. William (Willie)
Willie lived with his parents, then his mother, until (at least) 1892. He is listed at the same address as his mother in 1892. He doen't seem to appear in any records after that year.
Child 4. Walter
Walter lived with his mother Francenia in Jersey City, NJ, until his death. That is assumed from the Jersey City directory which, from 1892 through 1895, lists Walter C Van Zandt, clerk, residing at the same address as Francenia B Van Zandt. Walter C Van Zandt, clerk, died2526 Jan 15, 1896, in Jersey City.
