In 1928, William M Barkley is listed in the St Paul City Directory1735 with spouse "Frieda." In 1930, Frieda Barkley, widowed, living at the same address as listed in the city directory in 1928, is listed with daughter Corrinne, born ~1926. Conveniently, Frieda's mother and father are listed in her household.
In 1900, William Barkley, born Jul 1893, is listed as "nephew" in the household of Francenea Van Zandt. Fran is otherwise (circumstantially) identified as Fran Barkley, daughter of Hugh and Phebe Barkley. This William Barkley is otherwise identified221 as William Montgomery Barkley. With references indicating that Fran Barkley Van Zandt had a brother William Montgomery Barkley, there is little doubt that William Barkley, b 1893, is the son of William Barkley. Additionally, a draft registration221 for William Montgomery Barkley lists his birthdate and birthplace, consistent with the above assumptions. Although no documentaiton is found that directly indicates that Mary Matt is William's mother, neither is there an indication that William's father married after his marriage to Mary Matt and prior to Anna Henries. William's mother being Mary Matt is, at this time, an assumption. In 1905, William M Barkley, age 11, was living in New Jersey with Francenia Van Zandt and two of her children. In 1910, although enumerated as "Barkley Van Zandt, nephew," William was living with his aunt Francenia (Barkley) Van Zandt and two of her children. In 1915, his WWI draft registration lists his occupation as "display advertising." In 1920, he was a newspaper editor, lodging at the YMCA on West Second St. in Duluth. By 1928, William had married Frieda, as they are listed1735 in that year in St Paul. In 1934, Frieda is listed1735 as the widow of Wm M Barkley. It is likely that William is the William M Barkley listed in the Minnesota Death Index757 as he doesn't seem to otherwise appear after 1929. Though neither his birthdate nor his age is listed in that record, a headstone for William M Barkley, 1893-1929, is found in Sunset Cem., Minneapolis. That headstone also has a notation reading "CO A 353 INF USA." The history of the 353 Infantry (www.kancoll.org) lists in the personnel of Company A, American Expeditionary Forces, Wm. M. Barkley, 425 N 1st St, Duluth, MN.
