The death certificate2188 for George H Vesey lists his parents as James Vesey, b Vermont, and Betsy Randall, b Ohio. The date of the marriage of James and Betsy is a guess based on George's birthdate (1841).
James Madison Vesey was born ~1809 (records have variously ages indicating 1808 ~ 1810), in Vermont, probably Braintree as his parents lived there before and after his birth date.
In the will5336 of Benjamin Vesey, signed Mar 5, 1828, Madison Vesey is named one of Benjamin's "three youngest sons."
It's not clear when he moved to Michigan, but probably in the early 1830s, as son Horace was born in Michigan. Sometime before 1840, he moved to St Joseph Co., Indiana (sons George and William were born in Indiana). Before about 1849 (daughter Harriet born ~1849 in Michigan,) he moved to Michgan.
The 1840 census5281 for St Joseph Co., Indiana, lists a Madison Veasey(?) with 1 male < 5y, 1 male 30-40y, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 15-20. It is likely that is the family of James Madison Vesey, as he married second abt 1840. I.e., the young male could be son Horace, the younger female could be Elizabeth, the older female could be second wife Betsy. Further, sons George and William, as several records indicate, was born in Indiana.
James Madison Vesey is listed variously as "James M", "J M", "Jas M," "Madison J," and "Madison." His full name is assumed from that information.
In 18602901, Madison Vesey is listed as a mason. In 1880, Madison J Vesey is listed5246 as a stone mason.
Hillman800 has Mrs J M Vesey died in Bronson, Branch Co., Michigan, Mar 27, 1897, at the age of 77, referencing an obituary in the Mishawaka (IN) Daily News, 29 Mar 1897.
A headstone840 in Mishawaka City Cem., Mishawaka, IN, reads: “BETSY RANDALL WIFE OF JAMES M VESEY.” The image of the headstone doesn't show the dates; the accompanying text for that findagrave.com entry has birth 1821, death 1897.
