Ethie and Austin were married by James Todd, D.D., Minister, of Quincy. It was the first marriage for both.

Austin's birth record lists him as Austin Allen. His marriage record to Ethie Helene Veazie lists him as Austin Annard. Other records list him as Austin A. He was living with his parents in 1880 and 1900. In 1900, he is listed as a plumber saleman. In 1910 in Iowa, he and Helene were living in the household of Lewis Pratt and family. Austin was a traveling salesman. His 1918 WWI draft registration card clearly lists his name (in his own hand) as Austin Annard Sutherland. At that time, he was employed by the Baltimore Dry Dock Co. as an "angle smithstricker." In 1920 (St Louis, MO) he was a pottery salesman. In 1930 (LA, CA) he was a salesman in a department store. Sometime in the early 1930s, Austin and Helene moved to Islesboro. In the 1940 census, Austin and Helene were living next door to Helene's sister Vesta (Veazie) Hibbert.

Helene was living with her parents in 1880. In 1900, both parents having died, she was living with her uncle Marcellus Veazie. In 1903, she married Austin Sutherland. The marriage record⁴⁰⁰⁹ for Ethie to Austin lists her birthplace.
