Dorotha was the daughter of Harold and Dorotha (Gridley) Wilson. Harold's wife Dorotha died3358 on March 9, 1925, leaving her husband and 2 daughters: Wanda, age 1y 8m, and an infant daughter, perhaps less than a month old. By June of 1925, as indicated in the 1925 NY state census for Caton, Harold had remarried and his new wife and 2 very young daughters resided with him. In that record, the age of the youngest daughter is 90 days.
It's not clear what may have happened between the date of the census and perhaps just a month later, but the Corning (NY) Evening Leader, Jul 15, 1925, reported: "Adoption papers were granted today by Surrogate Smith in the adoption proceeding of Dorothy Ruth Wilson, age 12, daughter of Harold B. Wilson to John G. Winters of Caton." The age in that article is clearly an error; other information2159 indicates she was born 12 days before the death of her birth mother. In addition, Dorotha Ruth Winters appears in records following 1925, listed ages indicating a birth year of 1925 - e.g., age 5 in the 1930 census, age 15 in 1940.
Dorotha married first3334 Russel Eugene Williams. She married second3360 Chester Wilbur Gridley. The obituary for Dorotha's sister Wanda (Wilson) Davies, dated Mar 13, 2013, mentions Wanda's surviving sister Dorotha Williams Gridley of Melbourne, Florida.
Dorotha Ruth should not be confused with Dorothy Winters, born abt 1917, daughter of John and his first wife Florence Fravor. Florence's daughter appears in other records (e.g., censuses, newspaper articles) with her mother Florience.
