Determining her identity is assumed from the following:
- Mrs Mary A Barkley "of Crystal, NY" married3448 Frank X Litz "of Homer," at the Congregational parsonage, Oswego, NY, June 30, 1906.
- That Mary Barkley Litz was Alonzo's widow: Watkins NY Express, Sep 1, 1915, in the Monterey section of Schuyler County News, mentions "Mrs Mary Litz, formerly Mrs Alonzo Barkley, of Homer" was a caller in town.
- Cortland (NY) Democrate, Dec 28,1906, mentions that Mrs Mary Litz of Homer was spending a few days with her uncle, Dix Hobart, indicating that one of her parents was named Hobart.
- Homer (NY) Post Dec 2, 1932(3?) mentions that Mrs Mary A Litz returned to her home in Homer after visiting her sister Mrs Wallace Salisbury. Other newspaper articles and census records indicate the wife of Wallace Salisbury as "Agnes."
- Genealogical and Family Histort of Central New York, Vol I, William Cutter, p 236 (www.fultonhistory.com), has William Wallace Salisbury, of Preble, NY, married Agnes Hobart, of Homer, NY, daighter of Jeremiah and Maria (Rainey) Hobart.
- Various newspaper articles mention a mortgage foreclosure of land owned jointly by Jennie Owen, Mary Litz and Agnes Salisbury.The relationship of the three mentioned isn't stated. However,
- the 1870 census3450 for Homer, NY, lists Mary A and Jennie Hobart in the household of Jeremiah and Maria Hobart. Also,
- the 1875 state census3449 for Scott, NY, lists Maryann, Jane and Agnes Hobart in the household of Jeremiah and Mariah Hobart.
- Regarding Dix Hobart, the uncle of Mrs Mary Litz, the 1850 census3451 for Preble, NY, lists Jeremiah and Dix Hobart among other apparent siblings in the household of Leman and Lititia Hobart.
From this information, it is assumed Alonzo's wife was Mary A Hobart, daughter of Jeremiah and Mariah (Rainey) Hobart.
The marriage date is assumed from newspaper articles in 1890 which mention "Alonzo E Barkley and wife."
In the Jun 1855 NY state census, Alonzo's age is 8/12 (8 mos.) and lists him as being born in Schuyler County. In the 1875 census, Alonzo's birthplace is listed as Steuben County. In 1880, Alonzo is listed as an insurance agent.

Mary's middle name comes from a newspaper article (Cortland NY Democrat, Jan 18, 1929) which mentions a land conveyance by "Frank X Litz and Mary Amanda Litz."
