Family of Joseph R SMITH and Helen L (AKA Ellen) HUNT

Joseph R SMITH b. 1825~346 at Maine346. d. 1887 aft?388.
Helen L (AKA Ellen) HUNT b. 1816~4589 at Maine4589. d. 1892 Sep 75996 at Key West, FL5996.

Married2317 1848 Sep 122317 at Bangor, ME2317.

In 1850, "J R" Smith, age 25, is listed as a tailor.

Joseph's parents aren't readily identifiable, but Hillman800 mentions, referencing Portland vital records, that he may be the son of Joseph and Louisa Smith, born Apr 7, 1826. That Joseph Smith was born a twin to Robert Smith, who may have died young, and Joseph was given the middle name Robert.

Hillman800, referencing information from Penobscot Co., Maine, probate records, has Joseph in California in 1852. A "J. R. Smith," occupation "miner," age 34, born in Maine, is listed in the 1860 census in Gold Mill, Carson Co., Utah territory (www.ancestry.com). Perhaps Joseph had gone west to seek his fortune. Joseph Smith is mentioned388 "now of Washington." Considering the publication date of that issue of the Bangor Historical Magazine, that may be after June, 1887.

In 1850, J R Smith, a tailor, resided346 in Bangor, ME. Listed in that household were Ellen Smith (age 37), Henry R Smith (age 1), Sarah Veazie (age 76), and Adison Russell (age 15, also a tailor). In 1860, Sarah Veazie, Helen L Smith and Henry R J Smith, resided826 in Portland, in the (apparently) boarding house of Sarah L Dow, "landlady," among several other residents. In April, 1862, Helen L Smith divorced4592 Joseph R Smith, in Cumberland Co., Maine. In 1870, Helen and son Henry resided4589 in Portland. Residing with them was Catharine Dolly, a domestic servant. Helen's real estate and personal values are listed as $2500 amd $8000 respectively, so it seems likely she owned the residence, perhaps as a result of the divorce settlement.

Hillman800 found an obituary for "Mrs H L Smith," mother of "Paymaster H R Smith" of Portland, Maine.

Child 1. Henry

In 1870, Henry R Smith resided4589 with his mother Helen Smith, and is listed as a newspaper reporter. The city directory for Boston, in both 1877 and 1879, listed "Smith Henry Randolph, reporter for Journal, 262 Washington. (1877: Boards 216 West Springfield)"

Henry Randolph Smith, age 33, married in the District of Columbia, Oct 16, 1883, Flora Foster, age 30.
