Peter Wendal Smith was born2204 in Gorham, Maine, to Col. John T and Mary Smith.

At the time of his marriage2204 to Mary J Shaw, Wendell was a resident of Portland. In 1850, Wendell is listed4587 as "Sheriff of county." Wendell may be the "Wendell L Smith," age 40, born Gorham, ME, "Sheriff," who, during the Mexican War, enlisted4588 June 6, 1846, in the Maine 1st Regiment. His residence was Middle Street, Portland. The regiment and company is listed as "1st Regiment, Wendell P. Smith's 'G' Company," with a term of enlistment of 1 year. Whether his experience in the Mexican War is the source of the rank "General" which is listed in several documents is a result of that enlistment has not, at present, been determined. The Portland, ME, city directory, 1846 (www.ancestry.com), in the Military section, mentions Wendell P. Smith, Colonel, as a field officer of the Portland Regiment. The Maine register and business directory 1856, 56 (www.ancestry.com), mentions Major General Wendell P Smith, of Portland, under "Fifth Division."

Gen. Wendall(sic) P Smith died2204 at the age of 56 of paralysis.

Mary J (Shaw) Smith died2204 a widow on Apr 22, 1892, in Portland, ME, of apoplexy and uraemea at the age of 84y 3m 28d. Her birth date is calculated from that information. That record lists her parents as Samuel Shaw and Rachel Veazie.

In 1850, Frances V W Smith, age 7, is listed in the household of Wendell and Mary Smith. In 1880, Fanny V W Smith lived with her mother. That record indicated she and her mother were both born in Portland. She and her mother resided at 180 Brackett St. In 1900, Fanniie Smith, though her relationship to head of household was listed as "roomer," resided at 180 Brackett St, and her occupation was "landlady," with the notation that she owned the house, free of mortgage. She may be the Fanny Smith buried (findagrave.com) in Eastern Cem., Gorham, Maine, born ~1844, died April 1931.
