In 1850, Emma J Mason, age 25, born Ohio, appears⁴⁶⁵¹ in the household of Chester Mason, with several children. The headstones⁸⁴⁰ for Chester D Mason and Emma Jane Butler Mason-Kelly, similar in appearance, are both located in Monroe Co., MI.

Chester D Mason registered⁴⁶⁵² for the Civil War draft in June, 1863. He was a resident of Bedford, Monroe Co., Michigan; was a farmer, born New York; and had former military service of "2" (assumed) to be "years."

Following Chester Mason's death, Emma married second James W Kelly.

The 1888 marriage record¹⁵²³ for Emma J Mason, age 63, married once previously, lists her parents as Amos Butler and Rebecca Vesey. It is assumed that Emma is the daughter of the Amos and Rebecca (Vesey) Butler of this genealogy. Emma's death certificate⁴⁶⁵⁰ provides her death date and place. That certificate, for which the informant was "Mrs Willard, 557 Missouri [Street?]," lists Emma's parents as "Ben Butler," born New York, and "Rebecca Vesey," born New York.
