Strangely, Carleton listed in several documents his birth place and the birth place of his parents as England. In the marriage certificate³³⁴⁵ for his marriage to Sadie Vesey, Carleton, age 23, listed his birthplace as England, and his parents as Charles S Flatt and Mary O Briant, both born England. In the 1910 census⁵³⁷⁰, Carleton G Flatt, age 30, married 3 years, listed his birthplace as England, and both parents born in England. In 1920, he listed²⁶⁸⁰ his own birth place as Illinois, but his parents' births in England.

However, in the 1900 census⁵³⁶⁹, for the family of Charles S and Mary Flatt, they are listed as born in New Jersey and Illinois, respectively. Son Carlton G Flatt is listed as born Aug, 1883, born in Illinois. The death certificate⁴⁷⁶⁰ for Carleton G Flatt (the informant is not indicated) lists information consistent with the 1900 census.

Carleton married second, May 17, 1920, in Denver, Colorado, Elsie Hellman. They had (at least) two children: Mary and Carlton John (Jack) Flatt.
