Several records list Walter's birthplace as Waterville, ME. As Waterville is (relatively) close to Pittston, Pittson (from prob earlier record825 ) is preferred. His birth record provides his middle name.

Walter appears to have enlisted5420 at least twice, possibly a third time, during the Civil War. Walter L Boynton, with named dependent "Minor" Laura M Boynton, served4053 in Co 3 of the Maine Infantry. He filed as an Invalid, Jun 13, 1879; and again on May 1, 1916, under class "Minor" from the state of Massachusetts. The latter filing was likely done by Laura following Walter's death earlier that year.

Walter L Boynton, age 20 on Apr 24, 1861, and ag 23 on Mar 28, 1864, may have served5420 in Co K, 47th, Mass. Vols; he enlisted in Co C, Inf 3d (Maine), Apr 24, 1861, and in Co J, Cav 2d, Mar 28, 1864; he left the latter service Aug 1, 1864, apprarently being transferred to the Navy.

In 1900, Walter L Boynton was listed5418 as a carriage painter. His death record3272 lists his occupation as R. R. car painter. He died at the age of 75y 4m 19d.
