Capt. Lycurgus P Gilkey died5434 Mon, Jan 6, 1902, at the home of his son-in-law, Mr F L Clayton, 1916 Mount Royal Terrace. He was 67 years old and died of Bright's disease. Gilkey was a master mariner, and had commanded and/or owned several vessels: the Argentine, of Bangor; the Nevada; the brigs Clara Jenkins and Josie Gilkey; and the schooner Belle Hooper. He sold the Belle Hooper about 1892, and spent his summers in Maine, and winters in Baltimore. About 1900, he bought a home in Vineland, NJ. He was survived by his wife, Mrs (nee Sprague) Gilkey, and two daughters, Mrs F L Clayton and Mrs Lelia E G Pike, of Baltimore. Gilkey was a Knights Templar, and a member of the Eureka Lodge, Royal Areanum.
On Jan 24, 1902, S Josephine Gilkey was given administration of the estate of Lycurgus P Gilkey, "late of the County of Cumberland, who died intestate," was granted by the surrogate court of Cumberland Co., NJ.
Farrow2976, pp 282-283, provides Josephine's birth date and parentage. She appears variously in records as Sarah, Sarah J, S Josephine, and Josephine. Her full name is assumed from that information.
In 1880, Josephine resided5435 in the home of her son-in-law, Fred Clayton, along with her daughter M Josie Clayton, daughter Lelia Gilkey, and 2 servants. It may be that husband Lycurgus was at sea, as he doesn't seem to appear in the 1880 census.

In 1860, this child of Lycurgus Gilkey appears397 as Josephine, age 1. In 1870, she appears563 as Mabelle J Gilkey, age 11. Her full name is assumed from that information.
Child 2. Leila
In 1870, Leila E Gilkey resided563 with her parents and sister. In 1880, Lelia resided5435 in the household of her brother-in-law, Fred Clayton, her sister's husband, along with her sister, her mother and 2 servants. In 1920, Lela E G Pike, a widow, resided5437 with her mother and widowed sister in Vineland, NJ.
