Family of William MCGOWAN and Mary JONES

William MCGOWAN b. 1817 Feb 11840 at Westchester Co., NY5534. d. 1878 Oct 21840 at Urbana, Steuben Co., NY5542. bd. Mount Washington Cem., Urbana, New York5617.
Mary JONES b. 1818 Jun 9797 at Cornwall, Orange Co., NY797. d. 1891 Apr 125538 at Hammondsport, Steuben Co., NY5538. bd. Mt Washington Cem., Urbana, Steuben Co., NY5617.

Married5532 1840 Jan 15532 at Orr's Mills, Orange Co., NY797.

At present, there is no direct documentation, other than unsourced information from his descendants, that William McGowan was the son of James McGowan and Clarisa Lockwood. There are corroborative DNA matches with several of William McGowan's descendants with descendants of Leonard Ferris and Elizabeth McGowan, and of Rufus Clark Alkins and Clarisa McGowan. William's parents are assumed to be James and Clarisa (Lockwood) McGowan, as the death certficate5569 of Elizabeth Ferris lists her parents as James Macgowen and Claris Lockwood.

In 1850, William was listed5533 as a blacksmith. In other records, he appears as a farmer.

In the 1855 census, William's birthplace is listed{\5534} as Weschester(sic) [county]./par

In the 1870 census5539, William McGowan listed both of his parents as "of foreign birth."

Also, in that 1870 enumeration, a "Chas" McGowan, age 19, born New York, is listed in William McGowan's household. As he doesn't appear in other records as a relation of this William McGowan, it may be that the census entry was an error, or he is a distant relative not yet identified.

William is assumed to have died in Urbana, New York, from his residence there5542 in 1875, his widow Mary residing there5550 in 1880, and his burial5617 in Mt Washington Cemetery in Urbana.

The headstone of William McGowan840 in Mount Washington Cem., Urbana, New York, reads: "William McGowan / Born / Feb 11 1815 / Died / Oct 21 1878 / Gone But Not Forgotten."

Mary is assumed to be the daughter797 of Samuel Jones and Rachel Norvell. The 1855 census5534 lists Mary's birthplace as Orange [county].

Mary McGowan died5617 at the age of 72y 10m. Her headstone840 in Mount Washington Cem., Urbana, NY, reads: "MARY J / Wife of / Wm McGOWAN / DIED / Apr 12 1891 / AGED / 72 Y's & 10 Ms." Mary's maiden is indicated5538 by her obituary: "Mrs Mary Jones McGowan." That obituary states she died in Hammondsport, NY, Apr 12, 1891, matching her headstone information.

Child 4. David

Of David McGowan: McGowan5616 has "Never married."

Child 8. Levi

The McGowan Bible(\super 5532} has only "Levi." McGowan5616 has middle name "Amos," and "Never married." The 1855 census5534, enumerated June 27, lists his age as 2 months. In 1880, Levi resided5550 with his widowed sister, "Ema J Margison," and Emma's daughters Ida and Elizabeth. He was single and his occupation was "laborer."
