At present, the only information for John Smith, the husband of Amy (McGowan) Margeson is that he was "of Hammondsport" in 1883 at the time of his marriage5871 to her; they appear1091 as husband and wife in 1892 in Urbana. He was 47 years of age and a carpenter; and he died before 1900, when Emma Smith in the household of Emma's daughter, Ida Foster, and Ida's husband, Martin Foster, listed as a widower. Several newspaper articles mentioning Mrs Emma Smith indicate John likely died before 1896.
There are multiple candidates for a John Smith who may have died in Steuben county in the early to mid 1890s, none of whom can definitely be identified as Emma's husband. Similarly, there are several candidates for John Smith in the 1880 census for Steuben county locations.
This child of William McGowan appears in records variously as "Amy" and "Emma." Amy J resided with her parents in 1850 in Phillipstown, NY5533. Amy J resided in Bath, NY, with her parents in 1855; in Savona, NY, in 1860; in Bath, NY, in 1865; and in Urbana, NY, in 1870.
In 1880, "Ema J Margison," widow and farmer, lived in Urbana, New York. Residing with her were her daughters Ida M and Elizabeth, and (assumed) her brother Levi McGowan. Levi's relationship to Ema is not indicated in the census record.
