A monument840 in Cold Spring Cem., Cold Spring, NY, reads: “Leonard Ferris / Born Feb 27 1811 / Died Sept 28 1888 / His wife / Elizabeth MacGowan / Born Dec 23, 1811 / died Oct 27 1900 / Amelia Ferris Christian / 1845 - 1916.” That may be the source of Donermeyer's birth/death dates.
Donermeyer797 has Leonard's parents (unsourced) as Joseph Ferris and Mary Denney. Corroboration for Leonard's father as Joseph Ferris is provided by the will4047 of Joseph Ferris, of Putnam Valley in Putnam County, was signed 31 Aug 1848. That will mentions son Daniel, son Joseph, son Leonard, son Richard, daughter Hannah (wife of Ferdinand Robinson), daughter Catherine (wife of Peter Denney), daughter Mary (wife of David Jacocks), and executors to be son Lenoard and friends Sylv(e)nus Warren and Lewis Birdsall of Cold Spring A petition4047 for the proof of the will of Joseph Ferris, dated 4 Feb 1852, made by Leonard Ferris and Sylvenus Warren of Putnam County, states Joseph Ferris was an inhabitant of the County of Putnam (NY) just prior to his death. That document stated the will was proved. In 1850, residing6005 in dwelling (assumed) adjacent to Leonard and Elizabeth Ferris and family in Putnam Valley, NY, was Joseph Ferris, age 77. From that information, it is assumed that the Joseph Ferris of the 1850 census was Leonard's father, and the Joseph Ferris mentioned in the will detailed above.
At present, no indication that Leonard's mother was Mary Denney has been found.
Several reports of the degrading health of Leonard Ferris appeared the The Cold Spring (NY) Recorder (www.fultonhistory.com) during the summer and fall of 1888. In a review of the events of 1888, a death notice5630 for Sept 28, 1888, reads: "Leonard Ferris died at his place near the Lake, aged 78 years."
Elizabeth (McGowan) Ferris died5569 Oct 27, 1900, Cold Spring, NY, of senility, at the age5631 of 88 yrs, 10 months and 3 days. The verified transcript of her death certificate lists her parents as "Jas. MacGowen" and "Claris Lockwood." The informant for that information is not indicated. Elizabeth's birth date is calculated from her death date, and her age at death listed in her obituary. Donermeyer797 has (unsourced) the same date.
In 1880, Leonard and Elizabeth Ferris resided5570 in Phillipstown, NY. Residing with them were Hannah H Ferris, listed as daughter, age 36; Ellen Slater, listed as sister, age 64; Leonard Ferris, listed as son, age 2; and Elizabeth Haley, listed as niece, age 7.
In 1900, Elizabeth Ferris resided5571 in Phillipstown, NY, in the household of Levi and Amelia F Christian, listed as "mother," born Dec 1811.
She died5631 later that year, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Haley, at the age of 88y 10m 3das. The funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs Levi Christian, the following Tuesday. Survivors were daughters Mrs Haley and Mrs Levi Christian, and sons Rev M L Ferris and George Ferris.
