The relationship of this Robert McGowan (more often appearing as "MacGowan" ) to James McGowan and Clarissa Lockwood has not been definitively established.

This Robert McGowan may be the "Robert McGowen," age 17, b NY, "printer," residing6047 in 1850, Newburgh, NY, in the household of John D Spaulding, "Editor." He may also be the "Robt McGowan", age 21, b Ulster Co., 5 yr res, printer, who resided2631 in the household of John A and Julia A Lockwood in 1855, New York, NY.

The death index entry4059 for Robert Woodruff Macgowan, who died Nov 28, 1920, in Bronx, NY, at the age of 87, lists his parents as Nathaniel Macgowan and Catherine Lockwood. The informant for that information isn't indicated. Robert can't be the son of Nathaniel McGowan of this genealogy (born just 10 years apart). Due to the similarity of the names "Catherine" and "Clarissa," both with surname Lockwood, and the lack of a convenient candidate for another Nathaniel Macgowan, it may be that the informant's information was in error (perhaps having heard of a relative Nathaniel, and misremembering "Clarissa" Lockwood.)

In an 1898 biography6007 of Robert W Macgowan, his father is stated to be "Jame W. Macgowan," in the business of hand weaving in Westchester County, before the days of machinery. Robert's grandfather is stated to be Nathaniel Lockwood, who served in the Revolutionary War in the Continental Army from Connecticut. That provides (unsourced) corroboration that Robert's mother was likely a Lockwood.

Robert's occupation was listed in 18753060 and 1880354 as "Printer." In 19154412, Robert W Macgowan is listed with an occupation of "printing." In that census, his wife is Agnes Macgowan, age 50, b Germany, resident in US 46 years. Residing with them was Mela (or Meta) Greene, listed as "niece," age 25, b US, a "moving picture actress."

In 1883, both Robert W and Elbert C McGowan are listed1735 as printers, home at 449 Carlton Ave, Brooklyn, NY. Whether they were related isn't indicated.

Adelaide's maiden name appears in the birth index entry3350 for daughter Elinor Clark McGowan.

Child 2. Adelaide (Addie)

Adelaide appears in the 1860 census1266 for NYC, enumerated 14 June, in the household of Robert and Adelaide McGowan, listed as age 6/12. Later censuses indicate she was born in the early 1860s. It may be that a daughter Adelaide that died in the early 1860s; they had a daughter born soon thereafter, and also named her Adelaide.
