Married661 1841~35. Marriage Date: in 1840, Abram is accounted for, without a spouse, in father James' household
Abram and Juliet's marriage date is assumed from Franklin's birthyear (thus married before 1842) and that Abram is accounted for in 1840 in his father James' household, without a spouse (thus married after 1840). In 1850, Abram (occupation: boatman), Juliett, Franklin and Adaline are listed in the residence of Walter and Rebecca Brittan, along with Mary J and Melinda Brittan. It appears that he soon became a farmer and remained at that occupation the rest of his life, as he is so listed in the censuses 1855 through 1880. The 1855 NY state census for Orange, Schuyler Co., lists the birth counties for Abram and his family. Abram's civil war draft registration in 1863 indicates he had 8 years prior service in the [illegible] Riffle[sic] Co., as a "Sergant Ensign Lieut & Capt." The Schuyler County chronicle (nyhistoricnewspapers.org), Dec 29, 1910, in an article on the history of the town of Orange, mentions Abram Barkley as the supervisor of Orange from 1859 to 1861, and from 1863 to 1868.
The 1875 census lists Juliett's birthplace as Dutchess Co.
Child 1. Franklin
In the 1850 census for Bradford, Franklin and his sister Adaline are listed with their parents Abram and Juliett. They are also listed in the household of their grandparents James and Cornelia. In 1855 and 1860, Franklin is listed with his parents in Orange, New York.
Child 3. Loretta
The 1875 census lists Loretta's birthplace as Steuben Co. In the 1880 census, Loretta is listed as "School Marm." In the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, Loretta, who appears not to have married, is listed as a dressmaker or seamstress.
From her obituary1196: she taught school in Monterey for 17 years and, having learned the dressmaking trade, she worked at that until she was 75.
