Earle was the son of Ernest Spencer Fowler of Chicago and the grandson of Erwin Fowler and Emeline B Spencer. His father founded an optical company there which failed⁷⁶⁷ about 1887. In 1920, Earle is a physician, working in a medical office. In 1930, Earle's occupation is oculist with his own practice, apparently working in the same field as his father.
Barbara's birthdate and place are given on her mother's passport application (1911).
