Family of Martin SAUNDERS and Lydia HARDIER

Martin SAUNDERS b. 1630 Aug 284815 at Sudbury, Suffolk, England4815.
Lydia HARDIER

Married2852 1651 Apr 12852 at Braintree, MA2852. "Martin Saunders Jun'r. and Liddia Hardier were maried the 2d mo. 1, 1651 by Mr Thomas Dudly of Roxbury."2852. Anderson, GMB4815, Vol VI, R-S, referencing "BrVR 716" ( Bates2852 ), has "MARTIN SAUNDERS - m. Braintree 1 April 1651 Lydia Hardier ..." Sprague841 has md Mar 2, 1651, apparently interpreting "2d mo. 1" in the marriage record as "second day of month 1" rather than "second month day 1."

April 1, rather than Mar 2, appears to be correct. The marriage dates in that section of the Braintree records are primarily in two styles: 1) parentheses around numbers for the day and month [ e.g., "(25) (10) 1656" ]; and without parentheses, month day year [ e.g., "the 7 mo 15, 1662" ]. Dates such as "(1) (9) 1655" and "2 mo. 6th. 1660" may be considered ambiguous, but the former examples chosen from the records seem to indicate that the first style is intended as "day-month-year," and the latter style "month-day-year."

Anderson4815, p 176, lists Martin Saunders as son of Martin Saunders and Rachel Brackett (widow of Peter Brackett), referencing NEHGR 66:177.
