In 1920, Ruth and Harry are listed, along with Ruth's mother Agnes (Thompson) Van Zandt, in the household of Agnes' brother, William Thompson. Although no marriage record was found, the 1930 census²⁶⁴⁰ lists Agnes S Van Zandt as the mother of Ruth B Austin.

Harry was a merchant and haberdasher.

In 1900 and 1910, Ruth was living with her parents. In 1920, Ruth B Austin, "niece," is listed in the household of William J Thompson, her mother's brother. Above Ruth's listing is William H J Austin, "Uncle-in-law." Not really William Thompson's "uncle," he is Ruth's husband, William Harry Austin, Jr, AKA Harry Austin. Also living in the household is Agnes Van Zandt (Ruth's mother), as well as Agnes' and William's sister Elizabeth Thompson.
