In 1870 and 1880, Ruthven was living with his parents. He lived1735 with his mother 1887-1889. In March, 1889, he married Agnes S Thompson in Jersey City. In 1893, Ruthven's daughter Ruth was born there. In 1900, Ruthven, a bookkeeper, had in his household his wife, his daughter Ruth, and William and Elizabeth Thompson, Agnes' siblings. Ruthven may be the "R P Van Zandt," mentioned in the Trenton Times, May 8, 1901, as a Supervising deputy grand regent of the Royal Arcanum. The Royal Arcanum lists itself as a fraternal benefit society. In 1907 [ibid] R P Van Zandt is mentioned as the chairman of the Committee on State of the Order, Royal Arcanum. In 1910, Ruthven was a cahier for a tobacco company. Ruthven died before Jan, 1920, the enumeration date for the Jersey City, NJ, census, in which Agnes is listed as a widow.
In 1880, Agnes was living with her parents in Hoboken. In 1920, Agnes Van Zandt, widow, was living2639 with her brother William Thompson and William's wife Cora. In 1930, Agnes was living with her daughter Ruth and Ruth's husband Harry Austin. Also listed in Harry Austin's household were Elizabeth Thomson (Agnes' sister), William Thomson (Agnes' brother), and Coretta Thomson (William's wife). Agnes' death is assumed to be prior to 1940 as she doesn't seem to otherwise appear after the 1930 census.
