The gravestone for Elijah Smith is found in the Veazie-Smith cemetery, perhaps 1400 feet to the west of the Longwood mansion, just south of Natchez, Mississippi [photograph by Lance King, who visited the cemetery, July, 2019]. The stone is in good repair and reads: "ELIJAH SMITH / born in Virginia / July 14th 1769 / died Feb. 23d 1828"

His obituary [Ariel (Natchez, MS), Sat, Mar 1, 1828, p 6; genealogybank.com] reads: "OBITUARY. - Departed this life on Friday, 22nd ult, at New Orleans, ELIJAH SMITH, esq. of this city. In him we have lost one of our oldest and most valued citizens - he has left behind him an affectionate wife, whom untoward fate deprived, even of the sad consolation of being near him, in his dying moments, and of delaying, were it possible, the fatal hour - chidren too survive him, whose respet and love have been his pride and joy - friends, who have known his worth, yet live to regret the irreparable loss of man hom probity and good will for his fellow beings have ever characterized."

In 1850, Mary Smith resided³⁰³² in Adams Co., Mississippi, age 60, born in England, real estate value $50,000. Residing with her were W. S. Smith, age 40, b Miss., a physician; and Elijah Smith, age 32, b Miss., a planter. That residence was adjacent (listed serially) to James H Veazie, and M. J. Veazie (Mary Smith's daughter.)

The stone is in good repair and reads: "MARY SMITH / BORN / In London, England. / August, 1784 / DIED / May 10th 186-" Percy Family³⁰⁴⁰ has death year 1863.
