Charles' obituary³³¹⁰ provides a lengthy sketch of his life. He was born in Dresden, NY, and, in 1868, he married Nellie Austin in Albion, Michigan. Except for 3 years spent in Michigan, he lived in Rome, NY.

Charles was prominent in city affairs, serving as superintendent of the water department for 17 years, as alderman, city treasurer and a member of the election board. He worked with his father in banking and insurance in the firm of Hayden & Son, continuing those pursuits following his father's death. His father was the first superintendent of the water department of Rome, having that position from 1872 to 1878, at which time, Charles was appointed to the office, filling it for 17 years.

He was a member of the Zion Episcopal Church, Roman (Masonic) Lodge, the Rome Commandery, Knights Templar, and various other organizations.

Ellen (Nellie) M Austin was the daughter of James C⁴⁷⁰⁹ and Rachel¹⁸⁵⁸ Austin. She was born⁴⁷⁰⁹ in Parma, NY, about 1845.

Nellie M Hayden died⁴⁷⁰⁹ following an iillness of 10 days at the home of her daughter Mrs Bert Baker, in Rome, NY. She was one of the founders of the Dorcas Guild of the Zion Episcopal Church and was, for many years, active in that church.
