In 1848, David C Bull of Crawford, Orange Co., NY, was nominated (Albany NY Evening Journal, Oct 20, 1848; fultonhistory.com) to the New York assembly by the Whig Party. That newspaper provided the opinion that "the nomination is a good one … Mr Bull is known [to the Whigs of the district] as a thoroughgoing Whig, [and] as a man every way qualified for the station." Several newspapers, in November, 1848, reported David C Bull as elected to the legislature of New York, representing Orange County.

In 18501231, David C and Maria Bull are listed with Daniel M, Melissa, Catherine, Jane H, Hannah C and Sarah J Bull.

In 18601232, David C Bull, age 65, is listed with Hannah C (age 23) and Sarah J (age 20) Bull in the household.

The probate records4283 for David C Bull indicate his will was dated Aug 17, 1865, had a codicil dated Nov 25, 1869, and proof was requested Jul 19, 1875. Thomas J Stitt and Robert M Crosby were executors. The provisions of the will mentioned 5 daughters: Florinda, Malissa(sic), Mary C., Jane H., and Sarah J. A "lunatic" son Daniel M is also mentioned. The executors noted that his will failed to make any provision for his daughter Hannah C Crosby, and they assigned her a proportional part of the estate. The petition papers list the surnames and town of residence for each of the children. That is the primary source for the marriages of David's daughters.

The probate records4283 also mention Mary M Nelson and Emma W Bull of New York city. No relationship to David Bull is mentioned and it may be they are nieces. E.g., the 1865 census for Newburgh, Orange Co., NY, lists (among others) Mary (age 17) and Emma W (age 14) as the children of Elizabeth Bull, age [unclear], all born in Orange Co., NY.

The headstone840 for David C Bull is quite worn. From the image: "David C Bull --- March 25 187-" The accompanying text on the website has born 23 Jul 1794; died 25 March 1875.

Maria does not appear in the household of David C Bull in the 1860 census. Her headstone840 reads: "M. B. / Died / Oct 29, 1851 / Maria Barkley / wife of / David C Bull / Aged 54 yrs / 11 mo. & 9 ds." Her birthdate is calculated from that information.

Child 1. Daniel

The 1865 census4060 for Crawford, NY, indicates that Daniel's father lived in Crawford his whole life. From that,, it is assumed that all the children were born in Orange Co., NY. Daniel M Bull is listed4282 in the 1883 will of his uncle William Thompson Barkley. The probate records list him (1883) in Brattleboro, Vermont, "mentally incapable of managing his affairs." Frederick Bodine, attorney, was appointed special gaurdian for Daniel.

Child 5. Jane

Jane H Bull was living with her parents in 18501231 and 18552656 in Crawford, NY. In her father's 1865 will and probate records4283, Jane H Copley of New York city is mentioned as a daughter of David C Bull. In the will (signed Mar 31, 1880) and probate records4282 (proved Jan, 1883) of William T Barkley, Jane H Copley, 349 W 17 st, NYC, is mentioned as William's niece. His will provided a bequest to "Henry Copley and Jane his wife."

The 1908 obituary5311 for Hannah Bull Crosby mentions a surviving sister, Mrs Jane Copley of New York city.

Child 7. Sarah

Sarah is assumed to have passed away about Feb, 1921, as her will and codicil were admitted5313 about that date. Her sister Florinda B Crawford was the trustee of her estate, and John K Evans was appointed executor. Mentioned in the estate were: Theodore Bull Stevens of Montgomery; Minnie E and Selina Byrne of New York; and David L Conkling for the Faith Mission in Middletown. The remainder of the estate was given to nieces and nephews (unnamed in the article.)
